Senior Area Homework Guidelines 2016

In Year 5 and 6 students are expected to be Self Managing and ensuring that they are completing some homework each night.  Below are guidelines for what students are expected to be completing.  It is important to remember that homework needs to be practising or reinforcing concepts and knowledge that they have already been exposed to at school and that sometimes children will progress at different rates.  If your child is finding something particularly difficult, please make contact with their teacher to discuss any issues.
We acknowledge that students have other things happening outside of school with sports, arts, cultural and club commitments and stress the need to balance their time spent on homework and their time spent on other activities.

Reading
It is expected that students are engaging in sustained reading for at least 10-15 minutes each day.  This may be material that has been sent home from school, your child’s own choice of reading material or a combination of the two.

Spelling
Each class will have different systems operating for spelling.  Each week we will have a list of ten words at the back of our notebook from the Essential Lists or another word source like our own writing.  We need to learn these words and we will be buddy tested on them on a Thursday.  We also have a list of words at the front of our spelling notebook which are related to our current topic.  During Literacy time we will be doing activities related to these words so we need to have our notebook at school each day.

Maths
Each student is expected to be practicing their basic facts so that they are able to instantly recall (can answer in four seconds without working it out) addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.  You can also help your child by posing problems for them to solve.

Termly Homework Challenge

Homework challenges will be set at the beginning of each term (except Term 1 when it will be set in week 7).  A range of activities that relate to our learning or that are valid activities for Year 5 and 6 students will be included. The emphasis on these activities is to complete them to a high standard, appropriate to your child’s abilities.

This homework is not compulsory, however the children who complete five or more of these each term will then be involved with a termly reward for their hard work.  Completed activities may be brought into school on Fridays to share with the class.

If you contact your child’s teacher they will be able to give access to resources for your child to complete these.  Examples are organising computer time before or after school or supplying paper.

We recognise that everybody is busy and that is why we have tried to be as flexible as possible with homework. Some of the challenge activities will be similar to activities and learning your child already does outside school hours.

Please talk to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or need clarification about what is required for homework.
