Each week a different problem or challenge will be posted here.  Solve the problem in the comments section of the post. Put the challenge number at the start of your answer and don't forget to explain/show how you got your answer!

Challenge #10 - Week 5 Term 3 2016

Heather's aunt gave her $120 to spend on clothes at the mall. She bought 2 shirts that cost $8 each and a pair of trousers that cost $29. How much money does Heather have left to buy more clothes?

Challenge #9 - Week 3 Term 3 2016

Ronna saved $53 in June, $34 in July, and $27 in August. Then Ronna spent $21 on school supplies and $67 on new clothes. How much money does Ronna have left?
$53 + $34 + $27= $114.  $21 + $67 = $88.  $114 - $88 = $26.  Rona had $26 left.

Challenge #8 - Week 2 Term 3 2016

There are 14 bicycles and 3 tricycles in the storage area at Kayla's flat building. Each bicycle has 2 wheels and each tricycle has 3 wheels. How many wheels are there in all?
There are 14 x 2 = 28 wheels on the bicycles and 3 x 3 = 9 wheels on the tricycles, 28 + 9 = 37.  There are 37 wheels altogether.

Challenge #7 - Week 1 Term 3 2016

For a school fundraiser, Hayley needs to sell 53 rolls of gift wrap. So far, she has sold 6 rolls to her grandmother, 8 rolls to her uncle, and 9 rolls to a neighbour. How many more rolls of gift wrap does Hayley need to sell?
Hayley has sold 23 rolls so far (6 + 8+ 9) and needs to sell 30 more (53 - 23).

Challenge #6 - Week 10 Term 2 2016

Apologies for there not being a challenge for a while - here's a toughy!
Martin made 4 stacks of wooden blocks. The first stack was 9 blocks tall. The second stack was 7 blocks taller than the first. The third stack was 2 blocks shorter than the second stack, and the last stack was 9 blocks taller than the third stack. How many blocks did Martin use in all?
The first stack is 9 blocks tall.  The second stack is 16 blocks (9 + 7).  The third stack is 14 blocks (16 - 2).  The fourth stack is 23 blocks (14 + 9).  Martin used 62 blocks (9 + 16 + 14 + 23).

Challenge #5 - Week 5 Term 2 2016

In Hemi's classroom there are red chairs, yellow chairs, and blue chairs. There are 4 red chairs. There are 4 times as many yellow chairs as red chairs, and there are 2 fewer blue chairs than yellow chairs. How many chairs are there in Hemi's classroom?
There are 4 red chairs.  4 x 4 is 16 so there are 16 yellow chairs. 16 - 2 is 14 so there are 14 blue chairs.  (16 + 4) + 14 = 34.  There are 34 chairs in Hemi's class.

Challenge #4 - Week 4 Term 2 2016

For breakfast, Diana bought a bagel for $3.30 and a glass of orange juice for $1.80. At lunch, Diana spent $4.80 on a sandwich and $2.20 on a carton of milk. How much more money did Diana spend on lunch than on breakfast?
Diana spent $5.10c on her breakfast and $7.00c on her lunch.  She spent $1.90c more at lunch.

The top view is C.

Challenge #2 - Week 2 Term 2 2016

Picture
These are all examples of reflection.  Each number has been reflected (1, 2, 3, etc) so the answer would be 88.

Challenge #1 - Week 1 Term 2 2016

Picture
The answer to this challenge is 16.  An apple is worth 10, a banana is worth 4 and coconuts are worth 2 so 2 + 10 + 4 = 16.
